Imaam Aboo Uthmaan as-Saaboonee (d.449H) (rahimahullah) said:

And one of the distinguishing signs of Ahlus-Sunnah is their love for the Imaams of the Sunnah, its Scholars, its helpers, and its close allies, and their hatred for the leaders of innovation who call to the Hell-Fire and who direct their associates and companions to the home of torment destruction. Allaah, the Sublime, has adorned the hearts of Ahlus-Sunnah, and the light of their hearts with love for the Scholars of the Sunnah, as a bounty from Him, Whose Magnificence is perfect and Sublime.

Ash shaykh Al Allaamah Muqbil ibn Hadee al Wadi’ee Rahimahullaah said:

“Our Daw’ah and our ’Aqeedah is more beloved to us than our own selves, our wealth and our offspring. So we are not prepared to part with it for gold nor silver. We say this so that no one may have hope in buying out our Daw’ah, nor should he think that it is possible for him to purchase it from us for deenaar or dirham.”

How are men known?

[From ‘al-Fawaa·idul-Hisaan’(2/18-19) of Husayn al-`Awaayishah].

Translated by Dawood Burbank

* From Sulaymaan ibn Mus-hir: from Kharashah ibn al-Hurr, who said:

‘A man bore witness in the presence of `Umar ibn al-Khattaab –radiyallaahu `anhu, so `Umar said to him: “I do not know you, and it does not harm you that I do not know you, but bring someone who does know you.”

So a man said: ‘I know him, O Chief of the Believers.’

He said: “What do you know of him.”

He said: ‘Uprightness.’

He said: “Is he your closest neighbour; so that you know about his night and his day, and his comings and goings?”

He said: ‘No.’

He said: “So have you had (monetary) dealings with him involving dirhams and deenars, which will indicate his piety?”

He said: ‘No.’

He said: “Then has he been your companion upon a journey which could indicate to you his good character?”

He said: ‘No.’

He said: “Then you do not know him.”

Then he said to the man: “Bring me someone who knows you.”[1]

[1] Reported by al-Bayhaqee and others, and it was declared to be ‘saheeh’ (authentic) by Ibnus-Sakan, and our Shaikh [i.e.Muhammad Naasiruddeen al-Albaanee] agreed; and refer to’al-Irwaa·’ (no.2637).

Shaykh Rabee Ibn Hadee al Madkhalee said
“And the time of narrations ended in the third generation.  So why did Ibn Taymiyyah raise the banner of criticism (an-naqd) and the banner of al-Jarh wat-Ta’deel?!  Likewise, so did adh-Dhahabee, Ibnul-Qayyim, Ibn Katheer, Ibn Hajr and others and they will continue until the Day of Judgement!  As long as there is this fight between the truth and falsehood and between the guidance and misguidance and between the people of the truth and falsehood and between the people of guidance and the misguidance, then it is inevitable that the swords of criticism and al-Jarh wat-Ta’deel be unsheathed against the people of falsehood.”
  • Refer to As’ilah Abee Rawaahah al-Manhajiyyah (p. 26).
